Jamaica Emblems

Jamaica’s history is very vibrant and rich, it speaks to the experiences of prosperity and the hardships that was endured and also the determination and the growth of the people.

After independence in 1962 there were Jamaica emblems and symbols which signifies this, they are as follows:
The National Emblems

The Jamaican National Anthem
A competition was organized in September 1961 for persons to submit words that would make up the song. Numerous entries were submitted and a group of persons were in charge of making the selection. It was then announced on the 19th of July 1962 the successful entrants that was chosen and the one that was used was in the form of a prayer.
With this new National Anthem, it instilled new pride and the code for the use was put forth. Two of the code is:
The first verse should be played or sung as specially designated on the entrance of the Heads of State and Government.

All Jamaicans should stand at attention, that is, heels together, when the National Anthem is being played and the gentleman must take off their hats.

The National Song – This titled “I Pledge my heart forever”

The National Pledge - This is for use on some special occasions as well at the beginning and end of term in schools. There is also a shorter pledge that is mostly used at schools.

The National Symbols
The National Symbols of Jamaica is a representation of the culture and the rich history. This defines the people as, Jamaicans that are proud of where they are coming from.
The National Symbols are:

The Coat of Arms: This was designed by Archbishop Williams Sandocroft and was granted by Britain in 1661. It has features such as Arms, Shield, Crest and Motto. The motto is “Out of many one people”, which reflects the mix of the Jamaican people. The Coat of Arms is not permitted without official sanction from the Prime Minister’s office.

The National Flag: This was raised first on the day of Independence, August 6, 1962. This signifies the birth of Jamaica and brings memories of past achievements; it is flown on many occasions showing the pride in the flag and of the people. The design on the flag is gold in diagonal cross, green color at the top and the bottom and black on the fly and the hoist.
The National Tree: The Blue Mahoe, this is indigenous to Jamaica

The National Fruit: Ackee, this was brought to Jamaica by Captain Bligh.

The National Bird: The Doctor Bird or Swallow Tail Humming Bird – endemic to Jamaica.

The National Flower: The Lignum Vita, Latin for “Long Life” from which comes one of its common names, tree of life. Indigenous to Jamaica and grows up to 17 meters (55ft)

The National Dish: Ackee and Salt fish

The National Costume: A full flared skirt made predominantly of Madras bandanna cotton, usually worn with a white peasant blouse edged with matching bandana. Headwear varies from elaborate bandana wrap designs to decorated straw hats..
